The House Officer Role within the Anesthesia Department plays a critical part in supporting perioperative care, ensuring patient safety, and contributing to smooth and effective functioning of surgical services. This position is designed for early-career doctors seeking to gain practical experience in anesthesia and perioperative medicine under close supervision, with strong emphasis on clinical skill development, patient-centered care, and inter-professional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

• Preoperative Assessment
  • Conduct throughout preoperative evaluations, including review of medical history, physical examination, and relevant investigations.
  • Identify and communicate potential anesthesia-related risks to the supervising consultant
  • Assist in developing individualized anesthesia plans to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
• Intraoperative Care
  • Participate in the delivery of anesthesia under supervision, ensuring the safety, comfort, and stability of patients during surgical procedures.
  • Monitor vital signs, manage airway support, and assist in intraoperative interventions as directed.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and other perioperative staff to maintain a safe surgical environment.
• Postoperative Review
  • Conduct post-anesthesia rounds to monitor recovery and manage any complications or concerns.
  • Document postoperative findings and communicate issues requiring escalation to the supervising team.
• Clinical Skill Development
  • Gain hands-on experience in key anesthesia-related procedures, including:
    • Airway management
    • Vascular access (IV/arterial lines)
    • Regional anesthesia techniques (e.g. neuraxial and peripheral nerve blocks)
• Shift and Roster Responsibilities
  • Participate in rostered duties that include day, night and weekend shifts as required by the department.
  • A minimum of two hours per week is protected for participation in formal medical education and learning opportunities.
• Education and Training
  • Actively engage in department-led teaching sessions, journal clubs, simulations and other learning activities.
  • Work under the direct supervision of senior medical staff with opportunities for feedback, mentorship, and professional growth.
  • Eligibility and Qualifications
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school
• Eligible for or currently holding a limited permit or full medical license to practice in NY State.
• Successful completion of USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or COMPLEX Levels 1 and 2, as applicable.
• Valid BLS and ACLS via AHA.
