Lead Blood Bank Technologist - Clinical Laboratories #1

Type: Full-Time (75 hours biweekly)

Shift: Evenings

Hours: 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM

Pay: $50.33 - $66.58 per hour. Lead gets additional 10%.

Job Summary:

The Lead Blood Bank Technologist provides direction and supervision to Blood Bank Technologists, who perform qualitative and quantitative analysis on specimens in the laboratory. Ensures quality controls are performed and specimens are processed through the LIS.

Responsibilities:

  • Has an understanding of the principles of tests performed, and working knowledge of equipment used in the station to which he/she is assigned.
  • Performs qualitative and quantitative analysis on all specimens received in the laboratory for the station to which he/she is assigned.
  • Observes and performs quality control on all Blood type and Rh the quality control policies and procedures in order to ensure reliable patient results.
  • Documents acceptance of the control results in the appropriate log book, as well as any problems with the controls, and performs the resolution to the problem.
  • Reports critical or life threatening results to the appropriate clinician, via telephone, and documents this in the LIS. Requests follow-up specimens as needed for further testing.
  • Performs required maintenance on instruments at the prescribed times and documents this fact in the appropriate logbook. Performs and Documents all troubleshooting done on the instruments in the appropriate log books.
  • Orders, results and credits test in the LIS with proper documentation when necessary as described in the departmental policy and procedure manual.
  • Maintains adequate storage of blood and blood products for transfusion. Orders are to be placed for Blood and Blood Products from Supplier as supplies are assessed on a daily and shift basis.
  • Retests donor and recipient blood and blood products after adverse reaction (Transfusion Reaction). Submits written report to Supervisor and Medical Director. Sends out all associated testing of segments, urine and blood for testing.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, or Medical Testing
  • NYS DOE Laboratory Technologist License
  • Minimum 2 years' recent experience in a Blood Bank
  • Experience with a computerized LIS
